Great question! Let’s break it down.
Chemical sunscreens rely on synthetic ingredients to absorb UV rays, turning them into heat that’s then released from your skin. They have their advantages – they tend to be lightweight and leave less of a noticeable cast on the skin – but for little ones, it’s just not worth the chemical risk.
Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, work by physically blocking the sun’s rays with natural ingredients like zinc oxide (our trusty bestie here at Sun Cub Co.). This makes them inherently chemical-free and a much safer option for kids and babies. Mineral sunscreens also don’t need time to sink into the skin – they do all their best work on the surface, blocking UV rays without absorbing into your bloodstream.
Why mineral is the winner

Zinc oxide is a hero ingredient found in most mineral sunscreen products for its excellent UV-blocking abilities. There are two commonly used sizes of zinc oxide particles – nano and non-nano. While this might sound kinda inconsequential, we promise it’s important!
Because non-nano particles aren’t microscopic, they won’t penetrate the skin and absorb into the bloodstream, unlike nano zinc oxide particles. Instead, they sit on the top layer of the skin to form a protective barrier against harsh rays. This makes non-nano zinc oxide-based sunscreens the most chemical-free, no-nasties options on the market.
Non-nano zinc oxide particles are also completely reef safe – the perfect option for families living life by the ocean.

Babies younger than 6 months have thin skin that’s extremely sensitive to both the sun and to the ingredients found in sunscreens. So, it’s not recommended to use Sun Cub or any other SPF-based products on babies this young.
Instead, keep your littlest cubs out of the sun as best you can, and protect them using clothing and hats. Some doctors may approve the use of a small amount of mineral sunscreen in scenarios where direct sun exposure is unavoidable – however you should always seek medical advice prior to application.

You bet it is! Our sunscreen is made with non-nano zinc oxide, a natural mineral UV filter that sits on top of the skin and doesn’t dissolve into the water.
Its free from chemical UV filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been linked to coral bleaching and marine damage.

We offer free shipping for orders over $70 in Australia.
For orders under $70, shipping is a flat rate of $10, Australia wide.

Returns & Refunds

Because of the nature of our products (especially sunscreen), we can’t accept returns or exchanges, even if unopened.
We also don’t offer returns for change of mind, so please choose carefully when placing your order.

f your order arrives damaged or something’s missing, please get in touch with us at hello@suncubco.com within 7 days of delivery. To be eligible for a replacement, the item must be unused and unopened — once it’s been opened or used, we’re unable to replace it.
